Description
Medium sized tree or shrub, usually only to 8-10ft, but occasionally to 30ft. Branches have large spikes/thorns. Trees may flower throughout much of the year, and their small yellow flowers are quite fragrant and blanket the tree. Flowers are followed by hard shelled, black pod fruit.
Hardiness
The espinillo is highly adaptable to arid regions and can surivive temperatures to 10-15F.
Growing Environment
Can withstand drought conditions. Needs minimal water and minimal care when established.
Propagation
By seeds.
Uses
Planted as an ornamental, or for its flower fragrance. Is thought to be a possible substitute for Cassie (Acacia farnesiana).
Native Range
Native to Peru, Argentina, and Northern Chile.
