Description
Shrubby plant to 5-10ft. The long fronds spread from the base of the plant.
Hardiness
Hardy to the low teens (F).
Growing Environment
Grows in all soil types. Grow in part shade or full sun. Generally need year-round water for good growth, though small periods of drought can be tolerated.
Propagation
By seed.
Uses
The plant has an amazing number of uses. The fronds can be used to make a highly durable and strong fiber. A dye can be obtained from the plant. The leaves can be crushed and an alcohol obtained from fermentation. The flower nectar is edible. Seeds can be roasted and used as a coffee substitute. A gum can be obtained from the leaves.

Native to New Zealand.
