Scarlet Nantes Carrot
Daucus carota
One of the most famous and classic heirloom carrots, the Scarlet Nantes produces medium, slender, orange-skinned carrots with the typical rich carrot flavor and a hint of red glow. The roots grow to 6-7" and taper towards the tip, with minimal cores. This type is known to keep well and has a good moisture content, making it a favorite choice for juicing. Seeds can be sown directly in the ground about 1/8-1/4" deep. They generally germinate within two weeks as long as soil temperatures are above 60-65F. Plants should be thinned out to 2" apart, (and if planting in rows, keep rows 12" apart). Grow in loose soil to avoid misshapen roots. (See the picture above for examples of this.)
