Native to Arctic and sub-Arctic regions throughout the Northern Hemisphere, it typical grows in tundra and boreal forest zones. Despite its popularity, most commercially sold berries are from wild plants and it is minimally cultivated. Low-growing, spreading plant, to rarely more than 6-10" high. Unlike most Rubus, this is a dioecious species, so both male and female plants are needed to bear fruits. Needs a cold winter, temperate climate.
