Sweet Meat Squash
Cucurbita maxima
A famous heirloom squash from the northwestern U.S., originally introduced by the Gill Brothers of Portland, OR. Sweet Meat is known for its hard-shelled, gray-green skinned fruits that have deep yellow-orange pulp, with an excellent sweet flavor. The fruits have a drier consistency, are stringless, and are popularly used for baking. Fruits are also noteworthy for their excellent keeping quality, lasting several months off of the vine. A wonderful heirloom that is still little known in much of the country.
