Astrocaryum vulgare
An interesting Brazilian palm tree with oval, 2" yellow-orange edible fruits. The fruits have a mildly sweet flavor and are high in vitamin A. They contain a single large seed.

Description
A medium sized palm growing to 12-30 feet. The trunk and stem parts have large black spines that can grow to several inches long.
Hardiness
Unknown.
Growing Environment
Thrives in moist, tropical environments. Its unclear whether this species is suitable in subtropical areas.
Propagation
By seeds.
Uses
The fruits are edible and are collected locally. Additionally, they are used in biodiesel production. The seeds are also fashioned into rings which have local cultural signifigance.
Native Range
Native to the northeastern Amazon region, including Para state and the Tocantins.
